Learning how to meditate can be a frustrating task for beginners. There are so many different types of meditation, even learning the basics of meditation can feel overwhelming.

One of my favorite ways of meditation is Non-Guided Meditation.

Non-Guided Meditation is an alternative or even a precursor to a guided meditation that allows you to effortlessly slip into a meditative state twice as fast.

I’m going to teach you everything there is to know about Non-Guided Meditation and how it can help you master meditation in half the time.

What Is Non-Guided Meditation?

Non-guided meditation is a special kind of meditation where you can choose your own topic for meditating.

It is also known as unguided meditation, open monitoring, or mindfulness meditation.

The practice of non-guided meditation requires a person to be fully aware of the moment and everything that goes on within and around him. He must be completely attentive, yet relaxed during such times.

There are no particular thoughts in this kind of meditation; it is just a general awareness of what is going on inside and around you. Non-guided meditation requires no special equipment or training.

What Is Unguided Meditation?

Unguided meditation is the same as Non-Guided Meditation

Unguided meditation does not involve a teacher, a spiritual guide, or even a written script.

In fact, it is perhaps the easiest type of meditation because it only involves your breathing and thoughts. You don’t need to worry about reciting any words or mantras while you meditate.

If you happen to fall asleep during an unguided meditation session, don’t worry. The point of meditation is to relax and calm the mind, so if that happens to involve closing your eyes and taking a nap, then do so.

Just remember that some forms of relaxation, such as napping, have their own set of rules and can have side effects if overused.

Unguided meditation is a form of silent meditation, also known as mindfulness meditation. The practice has been around for thousands of years and is often associated with Buddhism and other Eastern religions.

However, unguided meditation can be practiced by anyone regardless of their religious beliefs or lack thereof.

To meditate without guidance, you can focus on your breath, a mantra, or a visualization. You can also practice mindfulness meditation. The key to success is finding a method that works for you and practicing it regularly.

Meditating without guidance is similar to reading a book on your own instead of listening to an audiobook. While it’s more challenging, the practice can help you develop self-discipline and independence.

It can also help you build confidence in your ability to meditate without someone telling you what to do.

Of course, learning how to meditate without guidance doesn’t mean you should never join a class or attend a retreat. Even experienced meditators can benefit from time with an instructor or group of like-minded people.

Is It Better To Do Guided Or Unguided Meditation?

We’re often asked, “is it better to do guided or unguided meditation?”

The answer is: there’s no right choice. Guided meditation is a great way to learn how to meditate if you’re just starting out. A soothing voice can help you relax and keep your attention on the breath or an image or mantra.

For the beginner, guided meditation has a lot of benefits. It helps you learn the ropes and keep your practice on track.

It can also help you develop new skills, such as cultivating gratitude or loving-kindness.

If you’re more advanced in your meditation practice, unguided meditation can be more beneficial in helping you expand your potential to concentrate and focus on deeper levels.

In other words, I would recommend guided for beginners and unguided for those who have been meditating for some time.

Steps

  1. Find a quiet place with no distractions
  2. Close your eyes and start taking deep breaths.
  3. Start with counting each breath backward from 100 to 0.
  4. As you breathe, release any thoughts that come into your mind. Don’t judge them or let them become anything more than thoughts — just let them pass through your mind and disappear as you exhale your next breath.
  5. Once you get to zero, stop counting, but continue breathing deeply and releasing all thoughts until you feel ready to open your eyes once again.
