Understanding Spiritual Gifts

Each of us is unique in what we have been given in order to bless and serve others while being a light to the world as a part of the body of Christ.

But how can you acknowledge your gifts if you aren’t sure what they are or how to use them? Or maybe you’re aware of your abilities but don’t know how to put them to use.

For many Christians, spiritual talents appear to be an add-on to the Christian life. It’s wonderful to know what yours are and to utilize them, but it’s not required.

They appear to be additional credit. The truth, however, is diametrically opposed to our impression.

The Apostle Paul previewed the crucial importance of spiritual gifts in 1 Corinthians 2:4-5 when he said, “My message and my teaching were not with smart and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your trust may not depend on human wisdom, but on God’s power.”

In today’s church, it is typical for Christians to rely on intelligent and compelling words to persuade people about Jesus’ claims rather than relying on God’s power. That is why so much of our Christian life is ineffective: it lacks force.

Here are ways to help you identify and develop your spiritual gifts:

1. Conduct an inventory

A good place to start is to ask other believers what attributes they notice in you. They have most likely noticed God-given skills in you that you have not acknowledged in yourself.

You may be oblivious of your own traits simply because they haven’t been named to you. Reflection and prayer, as well as advice from others, might assist you in identifying your abilities.

Look for locations where your interests are piqued, where you come alive, and where God has given you the energy to offer.

2. Have your community validate them

Ask individuals in your faith community, whether a small group or a larger community, whether they identify these gifts in you as well.

These folks should be more familiar with you than most others in the church. Take the time to ask them to confirm your abilities. This is an excellent step for the entire group to take.

If they are unable to recognize your gifts, spend some time praying as a group and ask the Holy Spirit to assist you in identifying gifts. You may repay your group by identifying their presents for them as well.

3. Put them into practice

I know it’s simple, but it’s very true. How would you know whether you have a gift if you don’t put it to use? Find your position within the church body and serve if you know what your gifts are.

Although you may be requested to serve in an area that is not your passion, you may still serve and bring your passion to your job. You are, nevertheless, free to keep looking for areas where your passion comes alive.

4. Put them to the test

Because our church plant had a small enough congregation, we were able to put people to the test for spiritual talents they felt they possessed, including preaching.

I’m delighted we developed people’s gifts and helped them find a secure, pleasant atmosphere, whether some had or did not have this gift.

The church is the finest place for you to use your talents. Talk to your pastor about locations where you can put your gift to the test.

For example, if you have the gift of hospitality but don’t know where or how to use it, ask your pastor if there are any areas where you may use it: Is your church organizing a potluck? Are you able to prepare food or set up tables for the event?

5. Serve with them: It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that the church is merely a place to be fed a fantastic lecture and then depart.

The Bible’s depiction of God’s church is much more than that. Rather than a buffet where you eat your fill and then depart, the church is meant to be more like a potluck supper where everyone offers something to the table that might bless others.

Take a minute to ask God if He will show you a way to connect with the church via your abilities. Then, speak with the ministry leader to see if there is a way for you to serve alongside them.

6. Examine them

Consider the presents that bring you the most delight. This might sometimes be a good predictor of your talents.

Just as the Holy Spirit bestows talents on us as He sees fit, our natural tendencies can aid in determining how God wired us. God stitched us together in our mothers’ wombs.

As a result, He knows exactly what gifts He will provide before He offers them. When it comes to our abilities of knowledge and insight, sometimes all it takes is an inclination to recognize how God has blessed us.

7. Thank God for them

We frequently take for granted what God has given us, even our gifts. Praise God and appreciate those gifts during your next prayer session, whether in private or in church.

In your prayer, mention them by name. Take a moment to thank God for each one of them. Allow your church to add to that list if they find any more gifts you may not be aware of.

It is always great when someone recognizes your gift set and encourages you to operate within it.

8. Bless others with them

In addition to serving in a Christian context, think about how you may bless others with them. For example, I use my ability to write to teach Christians.

I prefer to bless people by writing handwritten messages to friends and family just to tell them how much I love them.

Given how uncommon it is to receive a handwritten note in the mail, this is a terrific way to remind individuals that I am thinking about them and grateful for their presence in my life.

If I can utilize my skill to benefit others, I may not gain any worldly blessings, but I am storing up treasures in heaven as a result.
